We all love children’s art. It’s very important that children are encourages to express themselves through engageing in the arts. As a self-employed bespoke furniture maker of many years standing I and a sculptor in more recent times I know the importance of cultivating and nurturing artistic endeavour. We want to encourage it. The Texaco Children’s Art Competition is now in it’s sixty eight year.

For more than 50 years, the petroleum industry and politicians have been warned about the climate risks of burning fossil fuels. Yet the top 20 fossil fuel firms have continued to expand and have been behind a third of all carbon emissions since 1965. This timeline shows who knew what and when, and how they communicated or obscured the threat to the public. Would you allow your children to participate in an art competition if it was sponsored by a tobacco company? Considering that fossil fuel related deaths accounted ????? in 2018

Air pollution caused by the burning of fossil fuels is estimated to be responsible for 8.7 million deaths across the world in 2018, which is more than tobacco related deaths. If fossil fuels are responsible for deaths via air pollution and other means, why is it still acceptable that fossil fuel companies have a public platform? The EU banned tobacco advertising and sponsorship, so surely banning fossil fuel advertisements and sponsorships is a no-brainer. In October 2021, Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda, Co. Louth, became the first art gallery in Ireland to inform Texaco (owned by Chevron) that they would no longer be acting as adjudicators for or hosting  the Texaco Children’s Art Competition

Founder of Just Forests, activist and craftsman

For the past 30PLUS years I have endeavoured to create awareness of the vital role nature, but in particular forests play in our lives. I am not political but I do have a strong sense of what’s right and wrong. And I am not going to turn a blind eye to corporate acts that threatens the quality of my life – are you?

I believe it’s wrong that large corporations can make huge profits at the expence of people’s wellbeing and the natural world because we all end up paying the price  – whether it’s in the poor quality of our drinking water, our depleted soil, our poisoned air or our basic human rights.

“This is not a campaign aimed at demonising your local shop owner who happens to provide the fuel for your vehicles.

No, this is a campaign aimed at holding the fossil fuel industry accountable for their criminal acts – in this case Texaco/Chevron.”
